Palm Tree Painting for Bondi Beach Home

This is the first commissioned painting I did. It is also the second-largest canvas I have completed so far and was done in May 2006. It's 91 cm x 121 cm (4 cm deep). The person who commissioned it asked for something with a palm tree and a beach. The painting now hangs the sun room in his house in Bondi Beach, Sydney.

Painting on the other side of world

I recently moved to Canada. Like in Australia, for now my studio is outdoors. The view is expansive and includes Mt Baker in the US. However, the weather and the lack of cover for the patio is less conducive to painting. So my output has dropped dramatically. Here is one that I did in Canada.

Horizons

I love the playing with colours in a wide-horizon type painting to create a vast expanses of space, with plenty of subtlety and dramatic contracts. The fourth picture, or the second painting, is one of the paintings I did in a series inspired by Lake George, a huge - mostly dry - area we often passed on our way from Sydney to Canberra and back.

Some That Didn't Make it

Sometimes I know immediately whether I've completed a painting, more often I am not so sure. I often `live' with those for a few days or weeks, and decide then. Here are some that I destroyed, and later wondered whether perhaps I shouldn't have.

She

One of the few less abstract works I have done. She's far from perfect but I cannot bring myself to paint over her.

Early Works

Well actually I have some real early works, but these are the first ones I did as an adult. They were done in February 2005 while I was in Taupo, New Zealand. I was preparing for my fifth Ironman triathlon and felt a strong urge to start painting. These are all done on paper, with acrylic paints.

Donation to Trailwalker team

Friends Gina and Fiona were part of a team that ran the 100-kilometre Sydney Oxfam Trailwalker in 2007 to raise money for charity. They auctioned one of my paintings and the proceeds went to Oxfam.

Gina's collection, the largest one of my paintings

One of my best friends, Gina, has also been one of the biggest supporters of my art. Always interested and enthused in my latest plastic developments, Gina's turned her home in what she has dubbed `The Dietz Gallery'. Above and below are a few of my creations that she and her partner have on their walls.
